These are discussions that we are hearing and having… and continue to do so daily! As a result of all that’s going on and that probably has gone on in our lives in the past, I’m almost sure that we’ve all had the feeling of wondering and asking, “What are we supposed to do?” “What is purpose of life.?”
This question is not new and, it seems that it is resurrected during some of the difficult times and experiences in our lives. During my years of teaching RCIA, and Adult Faith Formation, as well as during personal discussions with friends and family, this topic has come up over and over again.
As I thought about it, I realized there is only one answer—for everyone. Yes, I know we are all different, all individuals, with different gifts, different talents…it doesn’t matter the answer is the same for each one of us! The purpose of life is to get to heaven! It may sound stupid, idealistic or even seem like a form answer when there is no answer. However, YES, that’s the purpose of your life and the purpose of my life! To get back to God—the God Who created us just for that purpose.
The old Baltimore Catechism asks us and tells us, “Why did God make me? God made me to know Him, love Him and serve Him in this life and to live with Him forever in the next.” So, okay, we know that, but how do we do that? The answer is simple—FOLLOW GOD’S BLUEPRINT” And you don’t even have to be an engineer!
-Really, that’s all? -Yep, that’s all! Follow God’s blueprint! -That’s great! …..Wait, what IS His blueprint? Where do I find it? -Well, God’s blueprint can be found in the Word of God (Scripture), the Magisterium of the Catholic Church, and in Tradition of the Church. Additionally, upon our conception, God imprinted His law in our hearts. We know within us what is right and true, what is good or evil.
When I get overwhelmed with all that is happening either with myself or members of my family or friends, I have a “go to” prayer that brings me back to the faith that’s grounds me. Perhaps it will help you too. It is called “Poem to my Soul”, by St. Gregory of Nazianzus.
-Poem to My Soul- You have a task, my soul, A great task if you so desire. Scrutinize yourself seriously- Your being, your destiny; Where you come from and where you must rest; Seek to know whether it is life that you are living or if it something more You have a task, my soul, So purify your life!
Please consider God and His mysteries, Investigate what existed before this universe and What it is for you. Where you came from and What your destiny will be. This is your task, my soul. Therefore, purify your life.
Scripture holds the blueprint…in the Old Testament God gave His people/us His Ten Commandments. In the New Testament Jesus gives us the Greatest commandment—love God with all your heart, mind, strength. In my post of February 2, 2021 I wrote about the First and and Greatest Commandment. He also gave us the Sacraments (subjects for subsequent blogs), and Jesus gave the Church authority to “Let loose or to hold bound”.
And…Jesus imprinted His Blueprint upon your heart!!
