Have you looked at the picture or portrait of Our Lady of Good Counsel lately? I have. I have a prayer book with her on the cover which I use every single day, but never really noticed the details until recently! She’s beautiful! She’s humble! She’s strong! She’s a loving mother! The Blessed Mother knows her Son is God. Her head is bowed down with eyes semi-closed as if she asked her Divine Son, Jesus, for something… and is waiting for an answer…. In fact, the Latin phrase written in their halos, “SS Mater Boni Consilii, Ora Pro Nobis Jesum Filium Tuum” which means “Most Blessed Mother of Good Counsel, Pray for Us to Your Son Jesus”. Jesus in turn has His hand on her heart and lovingly looks up to her as if saying, “Mother, don’t worry, whatever you want I will do.” My friends, our blessed mother prays for us! She is our intercessor, our mediator, who pleads on our behalf to her son…. Don’t be afraid to go to her with your needs and your heart’s desire! Pray to her! Ask her for help in anything you may want or need! She will gladly intercede for you! Remember the wedding feast at Cana? It was the blessed Mother who saw the need and went to Jesus for help when there was no more wine. And even though Jesus told her it was not His time, she instructed the servants to do whatever He told them to do! Jesus a good obedient son! He will not refuse His mother of what she asks. But, my friends, we have to do our part! We have to “Do whatever He tells us”! We must do the work and “fill the jugs”! Only after we do all we can, only then, will Jesus do the impossible! Additionally, in this picture, I see Jesus asking His Mother for something… appealing to her as her son… He touches her heart and raises His eyes to her almost pleading for her to help Him…so that through her, as our mother, we can grow closer to Him…. And humbly, she gives her “Yes”, her “Fiat”! Again, and again….Moms intercede and make the way easier for their children to accomplish things that may be difficult or unpleasant. Friends, the Holy Rosary is a prayer through which we meditate on the various events in the lives of the Blessed Mother and of Jesus. It is a prayer which will help us to understand and perhaps feel a little of what they must have gone through and experienced. Do you not think our mother would do whatever she could to spare us pain!? So, we pray, “Hail, Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, mother of God, pray for us, sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen!” “Remember, O most loving Virgin Mary, that never was it know that anyone who fled to your protection, implored your help, or sought your intercession, was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence we fly unto you, O virgin of virgins, our mother. To you we come, before you we stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not our petitions, but in your mercy hear and answer us. Amen.”
